Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): How to Get Cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews

Search is splitting in two. Some people still click blue links — a growing number just read whatever AI answers back. Here's how to get chosen as that answer.

What is Answer Engine Optimization?

Search is splitting into two behaviours. Some people still type a query into Google and click through a list of blue links. A growing number ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews a question and read whatever answer comes back — often without visiting any website at all. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your content chosen as the source for that generated answer.

It's Not the Same Game as SEO

Traditional SEO optimises for ranking in a list. AEO optimises for being the thing an AI decides to cite, quote, or summarise from — a fundamentally different mechanism, even though the two overlap.

Each platform behaves differently:

  • ChatGPT tends to favour authoritative, long-form content
  • Perplexity favours fresh, well-sourced articles and updates its citations frequently
  • Google AI Overviews draws heavily from content that's already ranking in the top 10 organic results — so traditional SEO still matters, it's just not sufficient on its own

The Overlap Is Smaller Than You'd Think

Research suggests only around 8% of ChatGPT's citations and 28% of Perplexity's overlap with what ranks well in traditional Google search. In practice, that means a page can rank well in Google and still be invisible to AI answer engines, or vice versa — you can't assume one strategy covers both.

What Actually Moves the Needle

Lead with the answer. Answer engines favour pages that state a clear, direct answer near the top, then back it up with evidence — not pages that build up to a conclusion after several paragraphs of preamble. Keep it current. Pages that haven't been refreshed in the last quarter are roughly three times more likely to lose AI citations than pages updated recently. Static "evergreen" content isn't actually evergreen anymore. Third-party mentions count more than your own site. AI engines lean heavily on independent sources — review platforms, comparison articles, press coverage — rather than a brand's own marketing pages. Getting mentioned elsewhere is now part of the strategy, not a nice-to-have.

What This Means for Your Business

If your growth strategy is still "rank in Google and buy some ads," you're optimising for half the traffic that exists in 2026. AEO isn't a replacement for paid search or traditional SEO — it's a third channel that requires its own structure, freshness cadence, and off-site presence.

We treat this as part of the same digital growth strategy as paid campaigns and analytics — not a separate initiative bolted on afterward.
