AI Max for Search: Google's Newest Search Layer, Explained

Google is auto-upgrading Dynamic Search Ads accounts to AI Max for Search starting September 2026. Here''s what it actually does, the real performance numbers, and where to be careful.

AI Max for Search: Google's Newest Search Layer, Explained

Google is rolling AI Max for Search out of beta through 2026 — and starting in September, any account still running Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets, or campaign-level broad match will be upgraded to it automatically, whether you opt in or not. Here's what it actually does, and when it helps.

It's Not a New Campaign Type

AI Max is not a separate campaign format sitting alongside Search, Shopping, and Performance Max. It's an optimisation layer you switch on inside an existing Search campaign. That distinction matters: you keep your existing campaign structure, budgets, and reporting — AI Max just changes how aggressively Google's AI expands and adapts what it serves.

Two Things It Actually Does

1. Search Term Matching

Using broad match plus "keywordless" technology, AI Max looks past your literal keyword list and finds queries it judges relevant based on your existing keywords, ad copy, and landing pages — surfacing traffic a tightly-scoped keyword list would never catch.

2. Asset Optimisation

AI Max rewrites headlines and descriptions using your existing ad and landing page copy plus generative AI, and can send different visitors to different landing pages on your own site based on what it thinks they're actually looking for (final URL expansion).

The Numbers

Google's own data shows AI Max's full feature set — search term matching, text customisation, and final URL expansion together — delivers around 7% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA/ROAS versus running search term matching alone. That's a real but modest lift, not a silver bullet.

Where to Be Careful

  • Conversion tracking has to be clean first. AI Max optimises toward whatever you're tracking — if your conversions are noisy or miscounted, it will confidently optimise toward the wrong outcome, faster than a human would.
  • Keywordless matching needs supervision. Broader reach means broader risk of irrelevant queries slipping through. Check your search terms report more often in the first few weeks, not less.
  • Final URL expansion can surprise you. If your site has thin or outdated pages, AI Max may send traffic there instead of your intended landing page. Audit what it's actually choosing.

Should You Turn It On?

If your account already has solid conversion tracking and at least a few dozen conversions a month, AI Max is worth testing — the downside is limited since it builds on your existing campaign rather than replacing it. If your tracking isn't solid yet, fix that first; AI Max will only amplify whatever signal you're already sending it, good or bad.

This is exactly the kind of change that rewards having someone watching the account, not just the campaign — which is the whole idea behind ongoing Google Ads management rather than a set-and-forget setup.
